Rose, Ernestine (Povtovsky, Louise Süsmondi)
(1810-92)
   American women's rights activist, of Polish origin. Born in Piotrkow, Poland, her father was an Orthodox rabbi. She renounced Judaism and left Poland. She travelled throughout Europe champi-oning human rights. She later settled in England and was an associate of Robert Owen. Eventually she married William E. Rose and went to the US. She lectured on women's rights, abolition of slavery, temperance and freedom of thought.
